Safeguarding at Maiden Erlegh Bowling Club (MEBC)
Bowls England (BE) is committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive community where everyone can feel valued, safe and inclusive. They have provided training and resources to support Safeguarding Officers in their role and are also encouraging open communication and creating clear reporting channels to ensure that any concerns and incidents are addressed promptly.

What is Safeguarding?
Safeguarding is about creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone involved from young players to adult bowlers. It’s about taking steps to prevent and address any kind of harm or abuse. Safeguarding encompasses a broad range of concerns that could vary from discrimination, abuse or harassment.

What is not Safeguarding?
Safeguarding focuses on protecting individuals from harm (particularly children and vulnerable adults), not on resolving broader issues like club culture or personality conflicts.

Members should be aware that there is an on-line (20-minute) safeguarding course which is recommended for all members to complete so that we are all aware of our joint responsibility to have safeguarding in mind. A link to the course is provided below.

BE has set a deadline of May 2025 for all bowling clubs and County associations to appoint a Safeguarding Officer in time for the new season. Maiden Erlegh Bowls club has appointed Tracy Tackley as their Safeguarding Officer with support from Clive Thrower. Tracy’s contact details can be found on the Safeguarding Poster on the club lobby wall, or her email address is shown below.

MEBC has adopted the Bowls Development Alliance (BDA) safeguarding policy, links to which can also be found below.

MEBC has also appointed Trevor Wright to be responsible for Safeguarding matters at the club. We have clear whistle blowing procedures, a clear process for dealing with allegations and clear information sharing requirements.

It is the Safeguarding Officer’s responsibility to report safeguarding issues to BE for them to action. It is not their responsibility to investigate. MEBC has adopted the BE Safeguarding concern template for the reporting of concerns. Members need to be aware that confidentiality is maintained.
